![]() ![]() They need business skills like sales, marketing, management, and communication. Freelancers can earn a lot less or a lot more. In the UK, in-house translators earn between £18,000 and £30,000 per year. By nature, the income of freelancers varies considerably. There is a massive gap between the lowest and highest paid translators, which may be explained by the fact that the majority of translators are freelancers. Some freelance translators need a job on top of their translation work, others earn hundreds of thousands of pounds per year. Ultimately, the better one’s business acumen, the more likely they are to earn a high salary. As previously discussed, this has its financial pros and cons when compared to working as an in-house translator. They are responsible for finding their own work, marketing themselves, and selling their services - directly to clients or through an agency. Business Skills Freelance translators are essentially self-employed business owners.Without these, the salary could easily be much lower than working with an agency or as an employee. It could mean working on higher value projects, but to do so requires better sales, marketing, and communication skills. Working directly with clients has its advantages and disadvantages. Working with an agency is perhaps the less risky employment type, but it may mean lower pay, as the agency earns a proportion of the client’s budget. They then ask a freelancer, or a team of translators, to work on the client’s project. An agency is responsible for finding and communicating with clients. Clients Freelancers can work directly with clients or through an agency.Simply, freelance translators must have the ability and skills to run their own business. As a freelance translator, they could earn as little as £10,000 per year or as much as £100,000 per year. A highly skilled and experienced translator could earn over £40,000 per year as a company employee. The salary of a freelance translator is much harder to determine than that of an in-house translator because they have more control over the type, quantity, and price of the work that they do.Īs a translator, freelancing has its financial advantages and disadvantages. As a result, these positions are extremely competitive. Translators for the European Union and United Nations tend to earn the most. In the US, the average salary for a translator is $40,000 per year ( Sources: Glassdoor, Totaljobs, LinkedIn - via Translate Media ). They may earn over £30,000 in more experienced roles. On average, translators in the UK earn a starting salary of £18,000 to £21,000 per year. ![]() Quantity without quality is a sure-fire way for a translator to lose clients and earn less in the long term. Speed The length of a project depends on its specific requirements, but as a general rule, a faster translator can get more work done in less time, and thus has the potential to earn more money. In reality, not everybody does, nor is it necessarily a good idea. A freelancer may choose, for example, to add a 25% surcharge to their normal rate. Evening and Weekend Work It is possible for translators to charge more when they work evenings and weekends. For languages where demand exceeds supply, such as Vietnamese, translators tend to earn more. Languages like French and German are in high demand but there are also lots of professionals that can translate them. Language pair and direction influence the earning potential of a translator because of supply and demand. Translating Chinese to English is more valuable than English to Chinese because there is a lower supply of English speakers proficient in Chinese than there are Chinese speakers proficient in English. The direction of translation between two languages is also an earning variable. For example, a translator may convert Chinese into English, French into German, or Vietnamese into Spanish. Language Pair and Direction Language pair refers to the language being translated to and from. They depend on a number of factors including the country of employment, language pair, language direction, specialisation and whether the translator works as a freelancer or in-house employee. The job site Indeed reported in April 2018 that UK translators earned an average £24,115 per year over the past 36 months.Īs the graph above suggests: translation salaries vary considerably. ![]()

Azure Pricing Calculator When you consider you can run a G-Series VM with 32 cores, 448GB RAM, 6TB of SSD disk for 26 minutes and spend only $4.18- thats pretty amazing (No that isn’t a typo- that does say only $4). You can spin up that test environment, run it for 10min and blow it away all for the price of the time you used rather than an hour block where that service isn’t required for all that long. However, where AWS has additional frugal benefits (I won’t go into in this blog post), Azure has the advantage of by-the-minute billing. Yes AWS also has a pricing calculator as well incase you wanted to also compare pricing between the two clouds. Rather than simply making the gut call to go with Azure as your preferred public cloud provider, use the pricing calculator to estimate the monthly cost of your workload in the cloud without spending a cent. If you need a specific set of compute resources, then search what that looks like and calculate your per hour spend to then work out your monthly or yearly expenditure. The pricing calculator can assist you with choosing the right level of service for your pricing point. Utilising the Azure Pricing Calculator for your analysis purposes allows you to within a short period of time to estimate how much you will likely spend on any given service in any given month. Since then this has been the standard practice on almost all services on Azure. There was allot of feedback received to change pricing from by-the-hour to by-the-minute billing several years ago. Previously when Microsoft Azure was still Windows Azure, pricing mirrored that of AWS whereby IaaS and PaaS was billed by-the-hour. Yes I did say cent because pay-as-you-go pricing on a minute to minute charge basis means you can be very strategic in how you utilise Azure’s wealth of services. Maximising the investment you make in Azure is key to getting the most back for every cent spent. Enter the Microsoft Azure Pricing Calculator where you can accurately estimate your potential usage for any given service. From a lab or dev point of view, it is all well and good to dabble in Azure at the various tiers of engagement, but at the end of the day you could be left with a credit card bill allot larger than expected. Whether you’re wanting to deploy a new workload in Microsoft Azure, wanting to extend an existing workload via a hybrid scenario or like me wanting to use Azure outside of work to gain more knowledge and experience, the pay-as-you-go charge model can often times intimidate and even deter many from using a cloud service like Azure.
